Shenandoah Brownfield Redevelopment Program

The Shenandoah County Brownfield Program has been established to encourage the redevelopment and reuse of brownfield properties. We are dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders to bolster the brownfield redevelopment process and to maximize the human and environmental health, economic growth, and overall community benefits of brownfield redevelopment. The program includes site assessments, reuse and redevelopment planning, funding for development of brownfield site-specific cleanup plans, and conducting community engagement.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) defines a brownfield as "a property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant." The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VA DEQ), which has

the authority to administer the Brownfield Program, similarly defines

a brownfield.

Community-wide Brownfield redevelopment is important to the economic future and to human and environmental health. Cleanup of contaminated or potentially contaminated sites encourages investment and redevelopment and leads to economic growth and environmental benefits. Shenandoah County has identified target areas in and around Towns to direct the growth of diverse, quality industries that enhance the quality of life for its residents while attracting workforce to support new and existing industry.
